THE WALKING DEAD Spin-Off To Be Something Different - News Within!

Bringing you the best in Horror Movie News, and all things Horror.

Several months ago AMC officially greenlit a spin-off series for THE WALKING DEAD which has a lot of fans very curious as to what is going on there. Those of you that are ready to journey outside of Atlanta will be interested in today's news.

The new spin-off series, which currently wears the codename COBALT is on the verge of the cameras being ready to roll. THE WALKING DEAD creator Robert Kirkman, who is the co-creator and co-writer of the pilot for the new show offers some new information on the topic.

Kirkman spoke about the upcoming series in a recent interview with EW saying:

"I will say that this is going to be a show about family,” says Kirkman. “But it’s going to be a show about a different type of family that we haven’t explored in The Walking Dead thus far. So what we’re trying to do with The Walking Dead spinoff is keep the story as familiar as possible for people that love The Walking Dead, so you’ll get the kind of things that you expect from a Walking Dead story. But, at the same time, we’ll want to tell these stories in a completely different way with completely different people in a completely different setting that’s going to make for a fundamentally different show. I think the look and feel of The Walking Dead spinoff is going to be startlingly different.”

Kirkman mentions that you do not have to be a fan of the original series to enjoy the upcoming companion saying:

"We want it to be a new show that can stand on its own... You could watch The Walking Dead spinoff if you’ve never watched an episode of The Walking Dead and get a really great, rich, fulfilling experience out of it. It has to be a show that can stand on its own. I think that’s what we’ve accomplished, and we start filming in a couple of days. I’m really excited.”

When asked if the new series would have anything to do with the comic book series he responds:

“It’s Los Angeles. It’s a corner of the world that we have never explored in the comic book series… So it fits within that world, but it is all new characters, all new events and all kinds of crazy stuff.”

That all sounds really interesting knowing that the new series will offer fans something different. We know that the male lead character for the show Sean Cabrera a divorced teacher, and the female lead character, Nancy Tompkins, who was a guidance counselor end up traveling together somehow.

HARRY POTTER fans will be pleased to learn that Frank Dillane, best known for his role as young Tom Riddle (aka Voldemort) in HALF-BLOOD PRINCE, will play Nancy’s “screwed up teenage son,” Nick, who’s “too old to stay home, too scared to flee” and has “battled a drug problem.” Meanwhile, Alycia Debnam Carey has been cast as Ashley, Nancy’s “mostly level headed teenage daughter,” whose “ambition is in direct proportion to her older brother’s failures.”

Here is a list of the characters along with brief descriptions:

SEAN CABRERA | A Latino male in his early 40s, Sean is a good man trying to do right by everyone in his life.

CODY CABRERA | Sean’s whip-smart and rebellious teenage son. Known as the angriest kid in town.

NANCY TOMPKINS | A thirtysomething single mom to two kids, Nancy looks like the girl next door, but there’s an edge to her.

NICK TOMPKINS | Nancy’s screwed up teenage son. He’s too old to stay home, too scared to flee.

ASHLEY TOMPKINS | Nancy’s mostly level-headed teenage daughter. Her ambition is in direct proportion to her older brother’s failures. She loves her mom but it’s time to get out of Dodge.

ANDREA CHAPMAN | A somewhat wilted flower child, fortysomething Andrea — has retreated to the outskirts of the city to recover after a horrible marriage.

Director Adam Davidson is ready to direct the pilot episode. The new series is written by showrunner Dave Erickson and Robert Kirkman. Look for THE WALKING DEAD spin-off series possibly before the end of 2015.
