Carrie Fisher Passes Away

There is very sad news in the world today as we have learned that Carrie Fisher has passed away after suffering a heart attack. She was 60 years old.

Simon Halls, who is a family spokesman released this statement to PEOPLE on behalf of Billie Lourd, who is Fisher's daughter:

“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning.”

“She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”

Fisher went into cardiac arrest on December 23rd while on board a flight from London to Los Angeles. She was removed from her flight and taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for the heart attack.

Being the daughter of Debbie Reynolds and entertainer Eddie Fisher meant that she grew up in the world of film, theater and television.

In 1973 Fisher enrolled in the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, where she studied acting.



In 1975 she returned to Hollywood to make her debut appearance in the Warren Beatty-lead film SHAMPOO.

Her follow-up role would be in 1977's STAR WARS as Princess Leia, the character that would become her most defining.



Fisher returned to the STAR WARS Universe again as Princess Leia in 1980's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, then again in 1983 for RETURN OF THE JEDI, as well as 2015's THE FORCE AWAKENS.

The actress appeared alongside John Belushi in THE BLUES BROTHERS as his heart broken ex with a score to settle.



She appeared in THE MAN WITH ONE RED SHOE, Woody Allen’s HANNAH and HER SISTERS, as well as WHEN HARRY MET SALLY.

Fisher also appeared in 2000's SCREAM 3.



During most of the 1990's Fisher let her passions out through writing, publishing such books as Surrender The Pink and Delusions Of Grandma. She also had a hand in shaping scripts for multiple Hollywood productions such as HOOK, SISTER ACT, and THE WEDDING SINGER.

Her latest book, The Princess Diarist just hit the shelves last month.



Fisher is survived by her mom Reynolds, daughter Lourd and her French bulldog, Gary. (*Update: Mother Debbie Reynolds sadly passed away one day later.)
