Wow those are some vintage pics. Thanks for sharing Tommy
Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).
The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to caung trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it eaer for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.
To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities.
During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.
By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain.
The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the pasng of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of "bobbing" for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.
By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV degnated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated milarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dresng up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints', and All Souls', were called Hallowmas.

BLACK & GOLD
Everything is black and gold,
Black and gold, to-night:
Yellow pumpkins, yellow moon
Yellow candlelight;
Jet-black cats with golden eyes
Shadows black as ink,
Firelight blinking in the dark
With a yellow blinks
Black and gold, black and gold
Nothing in between-
When the world turns black and gold
Then it's Halloween!
By:Nancy Byrd Turner
HALLOWEEN
Halloween has come at last.
Witches goblins big black cats.
Funny faces round about
people laugh and people shout....BOO!
Up against the moon so high
see the ugly witches fly
Pumpkin faces laugh at me
I'm as scared as I can be!
SHADOWS
Shadows of a thousand years rise again unseen,
Voices whisper in the trees, "Tonight is Halloween!"
These are by me:
October DREAMS
A time of chilled wind
And a Harvest Moon
A paper Witch with a knotted broom
A Dancing Skeleton and a Whispering Ghost
The Old Scarecrow hanging on a post
A Jack-O-Lantern burning bright
To bring spirits back for just one night
The only night of the year
to become what you would not dare
Candy Apples, something sweet
I'll spare you the Trick if you give up the Treat
The air is filled with screams, laughter and song
All of which vanish at the first light of dawn.
LATE
The leaves rattle like old bones
I swear I hear moans
It's very late now
What is that lurking in the street
The ghostly Dead
Or a child in a bed sheet
It's very late now
A monster at my window
I gasp
I'm not sure if it's real
or a rubber mask
It's very late now
And nothing is as it seems
It's very late
On Halloween.
Halloween MAGIC
As the remaining sunlight glows its last
I dance out into the night
I’m ready for tricks
But candy would be nice
Anything can happen tonight
There is magic in the air
I carry my pumpkin
Its carved face flickers and burns
Amber flames keep the shadows and goblins at bay
Can it be scary?
You bet
But my pillowcase is only half full
And I’m not going home yet

Great thread.
All of my Halloween pictures from childhood are at my dad's house, so here is a picture from my place a few Halloweens back.
Unfortunately I don't have a lot of space to decorate, so I make due with decorating the porch and sometimes the windows.

Awesome pics guys!
I dont have any old school pics on my computer to post but from the time I can remember HALLOWEEN was THE holiday of the year for my brother and I. Even more than Xmas. My mom used to make our costumes from scratch....we'd carve pumpkins; bob for apples; of course trick or treat.....decorations. man the tes; the smells; the aura was what dreams are made of.
It never left me. I mourn the end of Samhain every year. Its so important to my and my family now that I have kids and also within the circle of my friends as we have followed the "wheel of the year" and all its fests for years now. Samhain being the most important.
I cant wait for this year....Halloween on a SATURDAY!

Well, nce this is on my mind... and this thread is about Halloween...
I'm planning on having a Halloween bash here at my house, and trying to make it a yearly event with a lot of cool stuff to do.
I'm also leaving an open invite to any Horrorbid freaks or other friends and fiends from around the U.S, should they want to attend. But here is my dilemma, having never done this before... I want it to be really cool and have plenty to do.
So any ideas for cool things to do at a Halloween party?
I plan on making my backyard the primary hangout place, with a fire pit, beer, lots of lighting/fog machines, food, and muc. Hopefully nobody falls in the pit and pulls a Tramer on me.
The living room will be decorated heavily and will show a non stop horror movie marathon with all the requite clascs.
I will host a costume contest, which every contestant will donate $5 to a pot for the winner.
Everyone attending must be in costume, and the top 5 finalists will be given away some free swag for being top dog.
Number one guy or gal will get the pot also.Other than that, I have no idea what to do.
Any help would be AWESOME.And Florida or Southern HB people, you guys are more than welcome to come...
and you have a place to stay if you do.
